School update.

Wow! I've been busy the past few months. Totally fogot to update this. Anyway, school's been doing okay. It's crazy to think it was a while since I've done any real design work between when I graduated and this. The start was tough, but I managed to get back in the fray.

I've learned a lot here, more than I thought I would. I know what area of design I want to focus on, and I already got a job doing it. It's scary to start out on your own, but I know I can manage.

I was a part of the Liveworm Design Studio for a seven week work placement/internship. It's a studio run by the QCA. Students can work there to get immersed in how a real design studio works and runs. I would have to say, that doing that was the best learning experience I've had so far. I even had one of my projects selected by a client to be put into production!

The semester is almost over, and then I'll have almost two months off (no exams) until semester two. I'll have to take off my learning hat, and become a tourist. Sad to say, but I've been here about 4 months now, and I haven't really done much sightseeing. Hopefully that will change.

First day of school, and other things

School started today, so no more being lazy around town, although I made a bunch of friends doing that. It was O-Week last week, and not only did I meet a lot of people, I went to a lot of places. Most notably the ocean. The last time I was at the ocean was over a decade ago in PEI, so I didn't remember it much. Either way, the water was really warm and the waves were huge too. I can't wait to go back, although I'll have to worry about school for now.

The ocean!

My first class today was at the Liveworm Design Studio at the South Bank campus. We got our first work today, and I realised how rusty I am with my design work. When you don't do it for a few months, your work starts to deteriorate, but I think that once I get into the swing of things, that should change. I already had better ideas on the way home today.

I have more school tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to that. Should be a good time here.

In Australia

So I made it. After a 30 hour trip, I'm in Australia. It's crazy really. I don't know if it's hit me yet, but I'm sure it will eventually. Maybe after I shake this jet lag.

So far everyone is really nice. I got groceries earlier today, and I had several people help me with my bags. Mind you, if I saw someone in my position, I'd help too. Struggling with ten bags is not fun, nor easy.

Everything smells distinctive. Like euycluptus. Canada doesn't have a smell, or maybe it does and I just don't notice it. Either way it's a plesant smell, and the bush around campus is very cool. Seeing different trees and animals is quite exciting. I have yet to see a koala though. Apparently they just chill out in the trees all day. I don't want to be a rubbernecker looking at all the animals though.

I think it will be a pretty great experience while I'm here. Trying new things, and seeing new places.

Self-portraits

First off, Happy New Year! Crazy that we are already in 2011. This year is going to be a big one for me. Lots of changes. The main one is that I leave for Australia in a month. So much stuff to do between now and then.

Anyway, I figured that the pictures on my homepage were a bit dull, so I spiced it up a bit! It's my personal site, so why not make it personal and put me centre stage? Ha! I did. Check it out, if you haven't already.

Here are some of the shots I took, albeit larger.

Self-portrait One

Self-portrait Two

Self-portrait Three

Self-portrait Four

Self-portrait Five

Totally classy, eh? It was fun taking them. I haven't used my SLR for a while, so it was nice to take it out, and see how much dust had gathered on it (honestly, there wasn't much!)

I know they're not the greatest shots out there, but I think they turned out pretty good. My lighting was two desk lamps. But hey, you work with what you've got.
